FORTY YEARS IN THE DESERT: Stephen Trimble’s Stories from the Road

I’ve been on the road for nearly forty years. As a park ranger, a photographer, a writer, a father, and above all, a listener. All these stories have given life to my books—more than twenty books, now.

I’m happy to present talks based on any of my books, and I've done so many times. I've also realized that my stories have broader appeal than those targeted audiences.

My fieldwork in Indian Country has revealed lessons for all of us—from an Apache girl's coming-of-age to Pueblo potters dreaming of new designs. I’ve watched my children make their connections with nature, and what I’ve learned from their explorations can be applied to life beyond parenting. Five-thousand-year-old Great Basin bristlecone pines, adobe churches in New Mexico, clapboard houses perched along Maine shorelines, monarch butterflies migrating home to Mexico—all these moments have taught me lessons that I love to share with audiences.

My job as a writer and photographer depends on paying attention. If I am to make the crucial connections, I need to look and to see and to get it down. In my camera. In my journal.

I’ve been looking for connections all my adult life. Now, it’s time to tease out the best stories from the road and pass them on. In these lessons, these connections, lie joy and strength and the exhilarating spark of new ideas.

The more we remember, the more we see, the more we take home—and the more innovative and understanding and wise we can be in our lives, our work, our world. The more connected we will be with our families, with our students, with each other, with ourselves.

Praise:

"Your presentation on Saturday floated. Your fluency in speech along with the breathtaking photos took the audience on an extraordinary excursion."
an audience member, Stegner Centennial Symposium, University of Utah

"...pulled an assortment of information together brilliantly. ...the stories were captivating. ...the presentation had a gentle, steady, intellectually & emotionally charged pace and language that kept the audience's attention."
students attending convocation speech, Southern Utah University

"Stephen Trimble is a very fine speaker. This time, however, he exceeded my own expectations—he was very fair to both sides of a very controversial issue. He was lucid, lyrical, and thought-provoking without being ostentatious. This program was held at a time when many people go out of town on vacation or favor outdoor activities to indoor public lectures. It is to Stephen Trimble's credit that the auditorium was full. Trimble's honesty in showing our ambivalence to difficult issues of preservation vs. making a quick buck or a good living was outstanding. Neither the business people in the audience nor the wilderness lovers felt slighted or trampled upon. All of us felt instructed, edified, piqued into thinking of conflicting issues posed by all public projects. Trimble deserves an award for this presentation."
Neila Seshachari, Utah Humanities Council/Weber County Public Library, Ogden, Utah

"Stephen Trimble is not just an excellent writer; he is also an extremely articulate and approachable presenter. When Stephen's presentation was over, it felt as if we had all been holding our breath. We were almost afraid to clap for fear of losing the light that he had brought to us."
Gail Hahn, Teton County Library, Jackson, Wyoming

"The Eagle Valley Library was fortunate to host Stephen Trimble for a narrated slide show about his new book Lasting Light: 125 Years of Grand Canyon Photography. Blending the world of words with beautiful imagery, Stephen has created a treasure in print that will help preserve wild places. Luckily, some of the audience took care of a bit of their holiday shopping with an author-signed edition. We highly recommend Stephen for your next event."
Charlyn Canada, director, Eagle Valley Library, Colorado

"We have nothing but raves for you."
Don Miller, Severson Dells Nature Center, Rockford, Illinois

"The audience was thrilled."
Museum of Indian Arts and Culture, Santa Fe

"I wanted again to express how excited I was with your contribution across many fronts at the symposium. Certainly the photographers/artists panel you moderated set a great standard for discussion that no other group could or even tried to reach."
Tom Blanchard, symposium organizer, Idaho State University
