<image:title>Blog - The Sagebrush Ocean * - Two generations have passed since I completed research for the 1989 publication of this book. That’s a lot of new science, a lot of history. We are learning to adapt to sobering aridification and epic change in the Desert West. The dwindling Great Salt Lake risks turning into a toxic dust bowl. The sagebrush ocean itself has become an endangered landscape. Some recent photographs of Nevada and Utah West Desert basins bear the caption, “the cheatgrass sea.” The Sagebrush Ocean needs to evolve with our 21st century understanding of this desert—but with a clarifying and sorrowful asterisk next to the title. That endlessly expansive image now rings bittersweet. We now mourn the West’s full-blown ocean of sagebrush redolent with acrid perfume, the essential aroma of this wild desert.</image:title>

<image:caption>…In all that country one is seldom removed from a suggestion of the sea, though there is nothing harder to come by than water for any purpose. The contours are all billowy; rank on rank of hills rise out of the plain like gray-backed breakers; the sagebrush gives them a sea shimmer. —Mary Austin, The Lands of the Sun, 1927</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - We’re killing the Great Salt Lake…</image:title>
<image:caption>The lake flooded Saltair, threatened I-80, and put the Salt Lake International Airport at risk. Those years were wild—and we all had the sense that, sure, the lake would go down but could come right back up in good water years. The lake level rose to a record high of 4212 feet above sea level in 1986, a dozen feet beyond its long-term average. This doesn’t sound like a big deal, but the lakebed is a shallow saucer, and adding or subtracting enough inflow to move the surface a foot or two up or down has enormous consequences..</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Buen viaje, mariposas…</image:title>
<image:caption>So what story to tell? “Tradition” in Ivins City might lead me to family, to values, to “heritage.” I have lots of potential material from my dad’s family, from time sitting around in Adirondack chairs in my grandparents’ backyard in Washington State, telling stories from the family farm back in North Dakota. Or I could tell stories from our own nuclear family traditions, our Passover dinner, our camping rituals, the eccentric traditions we have—as all families have. I spun through the possibilities, not quite sure where to land. But then I fully absorbed the date of the storytelling event, September 10th. Just an arbitrary day on the calendar, chosen for convenience. But the next day was not a random day at all. The day after our evening of storytelling would be September 11th. And so I knew exactly what story I would tell.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The conquistadores made the mistake of building Antigua, the original capital of Spanish colonial Guatemala, too close to the trio of volcanoes that ring its valley. Earthquakes, landslides, and eruptions from Volcán Fuego rattled the town until the colonists gave up in 1773 and moved to Guatemala City. The old capital was now "La Antigua Guatemala," "Old Guatemala," and, finally, just "Antigua," a place of ruins.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In each row out into the field, lined up for judging, the ranks of kites stepped down in size, each displaying a story constructed from brightly colored tissue paper—scenes of Mayan culture, family values, rainforest ecology, and memorials to victims of La Violencia (the decades of civil war and genocide). As the afternoon progressed, the play-by-play announcer asked the keepers of each fleet of kites to take a turn at flying, starting with the smallest kites made by the youngest kids. By mid-afternoon, kites twenty feet in diameter darted over a sun-spattered mosaic of crowds and Mayan costume, the great rounds of the largest kites standing behind like a theatrical backdrop, and on the horizon, the cones of the Guatemalan volcanic mountains.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The best books about Utah Canyon Country - I don’t recall what prompted me to take this picture of myself in my dorm room at Colorado College encountering Ed Abbey for the first time—other than wanting to capture that warm afternoon light in some way. But it sure seems prescient, given how much of my own life and work circles around those sandstone buttes on the cover.</image:title>

<image:title>About - A sampling of Steve's awards mirrors the wide embrace of his work: The Sierra Club's Ansel Adams Award for photography and conservation; The National Cowboy Museum’s Western Heritage “Wrangler” Award; and a Doctor of Humane Letters from his alma mater, Colorado College, honoring efforts to increase our understanding of Western landscapes and peoples. At the University of Utah, Trimble has taught writing to undergraduate students in the Honors College and to master's students in the Environmental Humanities program. He spent a year as a Wallace Stegner Centennial Fellow at the university's Tanner Humanities Center. His distinctive voice as a humanities-based naturalist leads visitors through the Natural History Museum of Utah; Steve wrote many of the exhibit labels and interviewed dozens of citizens, whose quotes are scattered throughout the museum.</image:title>

<image:title>About - Steve often serves as a consultant and writer for the conservation community, including a year with The Nature Conservancy’s Colorado Plateau Conservation Initiative and a collaboration with the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance as editor of a white paper to support the protection of Greater Canyonlands. His community involvement includes longtime service on the boards of the Sageland Collaborative and Utah Interfaith Power & Light and Grand Staircase Escalante Partners. In a landmark effort by writers hoping to sway public policy, Trimble co-compiled (with Terry Tempest Williams) the essay collection, Testimony: Writers of the West Speak on Behalf of Utah Wilderness. On March 27, 1996, Senator Russ Feingold (D-WI) read Trimble’s essay from Testimony on the floor of the United States Senate during his plea to protect Utah wilderness. Feingold concluded with, “That short piece of writing is so powerful…because it is a timeless statement about how people feel about natural places.” Steve edited Red Rock Stories: Three Generations of Writers Speak on Behalf of Utah's Public Lands in 2016, at a similar moment of crisis for Utah wildlands.</image:title>

<image:title>About - Salt Lake City's Catalyst Magazine recognized Steve in 2013 as one of 100 "catalysts, inspirators—those who have made our Wasatch Front community a more sustainable, compassionate and vibrant place to live." Artists of Utah chose Steve as one of Utah's "15 Most Influential Artists" in 2019 . What do they mean by "influential?" The artists "who make a difference in Utah." Steve appears here on the literary map of Utah. Steve and his wife have launched their two children into adulthood and make their home in Salt Lake City and in the redrock country of Torrey, Utah. From his city home on Capitol Hill, in Utah's oldest neighborhood, Steve revels in looking into the tantalizing space of the Great Basin. He also has an intimate relationship with the grounds of the Capitol! The family retreat in Torrey lies just two miles from Capitol Reef National Park, Steve's "home park," where he worked as a park ranger/naturalist when he was 25. Steve's decades of exploring Capitol Reef make his 2019 book, The Capitol Reef Reader, deeply personal.</image:title>
